Celebrating an Icon
Seventeen Canadian artists are honouring Gordon Lightfoot with an evening of his songs

When the Gordon Lightfoot tribute rolls into town, J.P. Cormier would love to see the legendary folk singer come out for a show. Then again, maybe he wouldn’t.

“I’ve been thinking about that a lot,” said Cormier, himself a celebrated Canadian instrumentalist and singer.

“I hope (Lightfoot) comes – but I don’t want to know, not until after the fact.”

“If I know he’s in the audience, I’ll probably freeze, it’s that scary. I mean, that’s like trying to copy a painting from daVinci – in front of him.”

Cormier is just one of 17 Canadian artists who will honour Lightfoot in song in The Way We Feel: A Tribute to Gordon Lightfoot, which comes to Brock University January 12.

But on a tour full of Lightfoot fans, the Cape Breton native is easily the most fervent. “I’ve dreamed about doing this,” said Cormier, who is releasing his own Lightfoot tribute album, The Long River, to coincide with the tour. >> more
